Lightning Strikes at Keelung Islet: Tourists Injured in Taiwan

Keelung, Taiwan - A dramatic incident unfolded at Keelung Islet on the 18th, as two tourists were injured after being affected by lightning. The incident occurred around 2:45 PM near the lighthouse, coinciding with the approach of a weather front and intense afternoon convective cloud development, bringing with it the potential for short-duration heavy rainfall, as warned by the Central Weather Administration.

One of the tourists, a 43-year-old male, was conscious but sustained burns to his left hand and dislocated his right hand in a fall. The second tourist, a 67-year-old female, reported numbness in her hand. Both were conscious and able to communicate. The Hai Xun (Coast Guard) and the Jin Long Hao (ship company) assisted in transporting the injured individuals to Bi Sha Fishing Port's inspection station for medical attention.

According to Director Cai Funing of Keelung City's Department of Industrial Development, the incident occurred during heavy rain and lightning. The tourists were reportedly affected by the electrical discharge from the lightning, not directly struck. The fall of the male tourist resulting in a dislocated hand was the most severe injury. The Department confirmed that both individuals were conscious, could walk and have received immediate medical attention.

Considering this was the first known lightning strike incident, authorities will review safety protocols, collaborating with boat operators to alert visitors to take shelter and prepare for sudden weather changes.
