Tamkang Bridge: Bridging a New Era for Transportation and Tourism in New Taipei City

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei City is witnessing significant progress on the Tamkang Bridge, a monumental infrastructure project poised to redefine connectivity between Tamsui and Bali districts, spanning the mouth of the Tamsui River.

The latest progress report indicates that the central support tower will be completed in July, followed by the Bali side of the bridge in September. Following rigorous stress tests and the completion of associated road work, the city aims to open the Tamkang Bridge for public use in March 2026.

According to the New Taipei Public Works Department, the structure was 81.8% complete as of the end of April. Construction will continue throughout the summer, with the third section of the bridge scheduled for completion by September.

The Tamkang Bridge is anticipated to dramatically shorten travel times between Taoyuan International Airport and Tamsui upon its opening. City planners are optimistic that this project will stimulate tourism and investment in both Bali and Tamsui, while simultaneously alleviating traffic congestion on the downstream Guandu Bridge.

To prepare for an influx of visitors, New Taipei has awarded a contract to the Yunbo Corporation to revitalize the Taipei Fisherman’s Wharf. This plan includes new restaurants, commercial market spaces, entertainment venues, and cultural attractions, as reported by Storm Media.

In addition to the bridge, New Taipei is also advancing the second phase of its light rail network in Tamsui. Plans include a new light rail line along the Tamsui River, extending from Hongshulin Station to Fisherman’s Wharf.

By 2025, the light rail system is projected to incorporate a line crossing the Tamkang Bridge, thereby connecting with a planned Bali light rail line, according to CNA.
