Taiwan Braces for Weather Extremes: Heavy Rain in the North, Scorching Heat in the South
The Central Weather Administration Issues Advisories Amidst Unseasonal Conditions

Taipei, May 24 – The Central Weather Administration (CWA) in Taiwan has issued a series of weather advisories highlighting contrasting conditions across the island. Residents are urged to take precautions as the northern regions face heavy rainfall while southern areas brace for intense heat.
Heavy rain advisories, effective from late morning to late afternoon, are in effect for Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Keelung City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, and Changhua County. These areas are expected to experience rainfall exceeding 80 millimeters (mm) in a 24-hour period or 40 mm within a single hour. Furthermore, extremely heavy rain advisories have been issued for Taichung and Miaoli County, warning of potential rainfall exceeding 200 mm in 24 hours or 100 mm in three hours.
The CWA anticipates sporadic showers and thundershowers in other areas of Taiwan.
Meanwhile, heat warnings are in place for southern Pingtung County and southeastern Taitung County. These regions could see temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days, or peak temperatures soaring above 38 degrees Celsius. Taitung is also predicted to experience foehn winds, characterized by dry downslope conditions.
The CWA indicates that the rain will provide a slight temperature drop in the northern and central parts of Taiwan. Temperatures are projected to range between 22-26 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan, and 23-31 degrees Celsius in central and northeastern Taiwan.
Taiwan's outlying islands are also anticipating cloudy or rainy skies. Penghu will see temperatures between 25-31 degrees Celsius, Kinmen between 24-29 degrees Celsius, and Matsu between 24-26 degrees Celsius throughout the day.
Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) stated that the third wave of plum rain is impacting Taiwan, bringing cloudy skies and intermittent showers nationwide until Monday. He anticipates a return to sunny conditions on Tuesday. Wu also forecasts the arrival of another weather front late Wednesday, which will also bring rain.
