Fresh Seafood Crisis at Newly Opened Guihou Fisherman's Market in Taiwan

A newly opened fisherman's market in Wanli District, New Taipei City, Taiwan, is facing challenges just days after its grand opening on April 27th, attended by Mayor Hou You-yi. Vendors at the Guihou Fisherman's Market are reporting significant losses due to unstable or absent seawater supply, resulting in the death of many live seafood items, including crab, shrimp, and fish. The situation has caused considerable financial strain on vendors.

Local representatives have called for immediate improvements to the water supply infrastructure. The Fisheries Department of the New Taipei City Government has stated that they are urging the responsible contractor to repair the water pump as quickly as possible and implement a backup system to ensure a consistent water supply.

The Guihou Fisherman's Market is renowned for its vendors, primarily fishermen selling their fresh catches. It is a popular destination along the North Coast, offering a variety of fresh seafood. The new market, managed by the local fisheries association, features 32 fresh seafood stalls on the first floor, selling local catches and dried seafood products, alongside a convenience store. The second floor boasts 12 cooked food stalls offering a range of seafood dishes, including stir-fries, grilled options, and steamed preparations.
