Container Truck Crash in Toucheng, Taiwan: Fatigue Suspected

A container truck driver is suspected of fatigue driving, resulting in a collision with a median on Provincial Highway 2, causing damage and power outages in the area.

A single-vehicle accident occurred in Wai'ao, Toucheng Township, Yilan County, Taiwan, around 6:00 AM this morning. A container truck, driven by a 43-year-old man identified as Mr. Xie, reportedly crashed into the median strip of Provincial Highway 2 (also known as the coastal highway). The driver is suspected of being fatigued at the time of the incident.

The impact caused the truck's front to veer into the southbound lane, while the main body of the vehicle came to rest in the innermost lane of the northbound carriageway. Fortunately, no other vehicles or individuals were involved in the accident. However, the collision caused significant damage to the median strip's electrical boxes and street light poles.

Debris from the truck and traffic signs littered the roadway and median, leaving the scene in disarray. The front of the truck sustained extensive damage. Furthermore, the crash caused a power outage affecting some nearby residences. Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) is currently working to restore electricity.

Police investigations indicate that Mr. Xie was driving northbound on the coastal highway when, near the Tiangong Temple, he lost control of the container truck and collided with the median. Mr. Xie sustained only minor injuries and tested negative for alcohol. The accident blocked northbound traffic and caused disruption.

The police are managing traffic flow and arranging for the removal of the damaged vehicle to expedite the restoration of normal traffic conditions. The precise cause of the accident is still under investigation.
