G7 Finance Ministers Forge Unity Amidst Global Economic Challenges
Despite internal disagreements, the G7 demonstrates a unified front on key economic and geopolitical issues.

Finance ministers and central bank governors from the G7 nations concluded their meetings, presenting a unified front despite underlying disagreements, particularly regarding US tariffs. The primary focus was tackling "excessive imbalances" within the global economy and considering additional sanctions against Russia.
Concerns existed before the meeting about the issuance of a final communique due to divergences on US tariffs and Washington's hesitance to label Russia's actions in Ukraine as illegal. However, after three days of discussions, the participants reached an agreement, signing a comprehensive document that omitted previous climate change language and softened references to the Ukraine war.

"We found common ground on the most pressing global issues that we face," stated Canadian Minister of Finance Francois-Philippe Champagne during the closing news conference. "I think it sends a very clear signal to the world... that the G7 is united in purpose and in action."
The officials, meeting in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, emphasized the need for a shared understanding of how "non-market policies and practices" negatively impact international economic security.
Although the document did not explicitly mention China, the references made by the US and other G7 economies to non-market policies and practices often target its state subsidies and its export-driven economic model.
Notably, the G7 statement did not address US President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which are causing disruptions in global trade and supply chains, thereby increasing economic uncertainty.
This gathering is a prelude to the G7 leaders' summit, scheduled from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis. The White House confirmed that President Trump will attend the summit.
The communique emphasized the importance of analyzing market concentration and international supply chain resilience.
"We agree on the importance of a level playing field and taking a broadly coordinated approach to address the harm caused by those who do not abide by the same rules and lack transparency," the group stated.
Additionally, it acknowledged the increase in low-value international "de minimis" package shipments, which can overload customs and tax collection systems and are vulnerable to illicit activities such as drug smuggling.
Concerning the war in Ukraine, the communique indicated that Russia could face further sanctions if it does not pursue a ceasefire.
"If such a ceasefire is not agreed, we will continue to explore all possible options, including options to maximize pressure such as further ramping up sanctions," it stated.
