Borobudur Temple: A Beacon of Harmony and Tolerance

Jakarta - Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has emphasized the profound significance of Borobudur Temple, not just as a remarkable tourist destination, but also as a powerful symbol of tolerance and harmony among religious communities in Indonesia. His remarks came following the recent commemoration of Vesak Day (Waisak), a sacred day for Buddhists worldwide.

"Borobudur, as a cultural heritage site, is a source of pride for the Indonesian nation," stated Zon. He highlighted the temple's evolution from a historical monument to a vibrant symbol of unity and spiritual growth. Reflecting on the 2025 Vesak Day theme, "Enhancing Self-Control and Wisdom to Achieve World Peace," Zon expressed his hope that this sacred day would inspire reflection and introspection to cultivate true peace globally.

Zon connected the theme's relevance to the current global climate, marked by ongoing conflicts that fuel hatred and suffering. He stressed that the core values embodied by the grandeur of Borobudur Temple can positively impact the nation and beyond. The minister also highlighted Borobudur's universal spiritual values, making it a place open to all of humanity.

"I am committed to continuing to promote Borobudur as a place that brings peace, inspiration, and enlightenment to anyone who visits it," Zon affirmed.

The Indonesia Council of Buddhist Communities (WALUBI) also reiterated its dedication to ongoing humanitarian efforts, including social services and disaster relief within the country. WALUBI chairwoman Siti Hartati Murdaya added, "With the spirit of compassion and care, we can be a light for others and create a better world.”
