Green Island SUP Rescue: Quick Action Saves Five from Strong Currents

On the evening of December 18th, 2024, five individuals participating in stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) activities off the coast of Green Island, Taiwan, found themselves in distress due to strong sea currents and exhaustion.

The incident occurred approximately 100 meters from the White Lighthouse. The Coast Guard's Eastern Division 13th Coastal Patrol team responded swiftly to the distress call received at 18:11, reporting that two SUP boards, carrying a total of five people, were unable to return to shore due to the prevailing conditions.

The Tenth Coastal Patrol District Command Center immediately instructed the Green Island Inspection Station and the 15th Coast Guard Team to launch an emergency response. Concurrently, they notified the Republic of China Lifeguard Association (Taitung Branch) and requested assistance from friendly fishing vessels familiar with the local waters.

Acting quickly, the Green Island Inspection Station deployed patrol vehicles and two Coast Guard personnel equipped with rescue gear to the Zhongliao Harbor. A lifeguard association instructor utilized a water propulsion device to reach the affected area and successfully rescued the first stranded individual at 18:25. Subsequently, the friendly fishing vessel "Hai ○ 2" arrived on the scene, carrying Coast Guard personnel, and safely retrieved the remaining four individuals at 18:31, transporting them to the Gongguan Fishing Port.

Preliminary checks confirmed that all five individuals were unharmed and in stable condition. They were released to return home after being confirmed to be in good health.

The Coast Guard emphasizes the importance of understanding sea conditions and personal physical capabilities before engaging in water sports. In the event of an emergency, the Coast Guard's "118" hotline is available for immediate assistance. The Coast Guard will promptly activate its emergency response mechanisms to ensure public safety.
