Taiwan's Sophisticated Real Estate Scam: "Taiwanese Ground Master" Swindles Over $4 Million

A Real Estate Scheme Involving Financial Companies, Pawn Shops, and Lawyers Rocks Taiwan
Taiwan's Sophisticated Real Estate Scam:

The Taichung District Prosecutors Office has cracked down on two cases of "Taiwanese Ground Master" scams, exposing a sophisticated network that defrauded individuals out of their properties. These schemes involved financial companies and resulted in over 20 people in Taiwan having their homes foreclosed. The combined illicit earnings totaled over 140 million NTD (approximately $4.3 million USD).

The investigation revealed that the fraudulent operations utilized a "three-layered peeling" strategy, where victims' land titles were used as collateral for fraudulent loans. In another case, the scam involved the collaboration of pawn shop owners and real estate agents. The prosecutors have indicted 13 individuals on charges related to organized crime.

The indictments detail the involvement of key figures, including Lin (33), the head of Shun Yi International Financial Company; Liao (32), the head of He Tai Leasing; and Liang (57), representing a financier. These individuals were found to have been involved in the scams since 2022, initially employing fake police and investment scams to defraud victims, causing an initial layer of damage.
