Drunk Driving Crackdown in Kaohsiung: Man Arrested on First Day of Increased Enforcement

Kaohsiung, Taiwan - Following two tragic incidents of drunk driving resulting in fatalities within a short span of three days, Kaohsiung City, under the direction of Mayor Chen Chi-mai, has initiated a city-wide crackdown on drunk driving. The heightened enforcement efforts, involving all 17 police precincts, were put into action to address growing public concern and prevent further loss of life.

Unfortunately, the initiative experienced an immediate setback. On the first day of intensified patrols, a man identified as Mr. Huang was apprehended. At approximately 5 a.m. today, Mr. Huang, while driving through the Renwu District, collided with a parked vehicle. The impact caused his car to overturn. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident. However, a breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.51 milligrams, leading to Mr. Huang's arrest on charges of endangering public safety. He has been referred to the justice system.

The Kaohsiung City Police Department had mobilized a substantial force for the operation, deploying 361 officers across 38 administrative districts on the first day of the crackdown. On December 12th alone, officers had already made 26 arrests related to drunk driving.

The incident involving Mr. Huang occurred when he was driving from Hougang Lane towards Bade 1st Road and failed to notice a parked vehicle, resulting in the collision. The precise cause of the accident remains under investigation. However, the immediate arrest of Mr. Huang serves as a clear indication of the city's ongoing efforts to address this significant public safety concern.
