Power Outages Hit Kaohsiung, Taiwan: Residents Face the Heat

Kaohsiung, Taiwan, experienced two separate power outages recently, leaving residents without electricity and struggling with the heat. The incidents, occurring late at night and in the early morning hours, underscore the challenges of maintaining reliable power distribution in a warm climate.

The first outage occurred in the Yancheng District on the evening of the 18th. Residents reported a loud explosion near a manhole cover. Upon investigation, Taipower (the Taiwan Power Company) determined that a low-voltage cable had malfunctioned, resulting in a power outage affecting 139 households, including the local Yancheng Police Precinct. The repair work involved a temporary power shutdown, causing discomfort for residents already enduring the warm night. The power was restored by 2:24 AM.

A second outage struck the Lingya District early on the 19th, this time due to a high-voltage cable failure. This incident impacted 440 households. Taipower crews worked throughout the night to resolve the issue and restore power, which was fully achieved by 6:08 AM.

The incidents highlight the importance of maintaining and upgrading power infrastructure to prevent such disruptions and ensure the comfort and safety of residents in Kaohsiung.
