Taiwan's Liver Foundation Teams Up with 7-Eleven for Free Liver Screenings
Early Detection Efforts Expand Across Taiwan, Targeting Liver Cancer and Related Conditions

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Liver Disease Prevention and Treatment Research Foundation in Taiwan is collaborating with 7-Eleven convenience stores to provide free liver screenings across the island. This initiative aims to enhance early detection of liver cancer and other related health issues.
A recent screening event held in Kaohsiung’s Dashe District Office, saw over 1,000 participants. These events offer a comprehensive range of health checks, including liver-related blood tests, abdominal ultrasounds, breast X-rays, Pap smears, fecal occult blood tests, and oral health screenings.
Participants undergoing abdominal ultrasounds receive immediate explanations of their results from nursing staff. The Foundation also assists in coordinating follow-up care with local health centers if necessary.
Abdominal ultrasounds are a crucial diagnostic tool for detecting liver cancer and identifying diseases in related organs such as the gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, and spleen. The Foundation recommends that individuals with hepatitis B or C undergo an abdominal ultrasound every six months to a year, while those with liver cirrhosis should have the test every three to six months.
The screening campaign has already served more than 20,000 individuals. Residents can easily register and learn more by scanning a QR code found on promotional posters at 7-Eleven stores.
Further extending the reach of this health initiative, the Foundation will be partnering with health centers throughout Taiwan to conduct more screening and abdominal ultrasound activities at 7-Eleven locations this year. Moreover, financial assistance will be provided to individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to cover items not included under the National Health Insurance.
According to data from the National Health Insurance Administration, Taiwan saw 9,488 new liver cancer cases in 2023, with 7,724 deaths attributed to the disease. The incidence of liver cancer increases with age, and men are about twice as likely to be affected as women.
The Administration estimates that there are 320,000 hepatitis C patients nationwide. They also reported that over 80% of patients have received treatment. The government aims to eliminate hepatitis C this year.
