Taiwan's Tragedy: Drunk Driving Lawyer's Plea for Leniency Rejected by Victim's Family

In a deeply moving case unfolding in Taiwan, trainee lawyer Zheng Zhaoyu, after attending a welcoming-farewell gathering, was found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing the death of a crane operator, Mr. Gao, due to speeding. The Taipei District Court, utilizing the citizen judge system, sentenced Zheng to seven years and six months in prison, citing his lack of empathy for the victim's family.

Following an appeal, the Taiwan High Court is currently holding preparatory proceedings. Zheng Zhaoyu, now seeking a lighter sentence, argues for a suspended sentence, citing his compensation of NT$12 million to the victim's family and errors in the initial sentencing. However, the victim's family has unequivocally stated that they cannot accept any form of leniency in the sentencing.
