Pingtung's Bluefin Tuna Festival: A Taiwanese Cultural Feast

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Pingtung Bluefin Tuna Cultural Festival launched its 25th year in Donggang Township, Taiwan, with a vibrant opening concert featuring the popular rock band Power Station, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the coastal town.

Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米) led the opening ceremony, accompanied by representatives from the fishing vessel Mao Feng Xiang (茂豐祥號), which landed the season's first bluefin tuna. The first buyer also participated in the event, a testament to the event's cultural significance and economic impact.

Chou highlighted the impressive catch: a 224 kg tuna that fetched NT$2.3 million (US$74,000) at auction, averaging NT$10,300 per kg. She further reported that 174 bluefin tuna had been caught since the season's commencement in April, maintaining high market prices.

Now in its 25th year, the festival has evolved into a significant attraction for both domestic and international tourists. The event not only celebrates the local fishing industry but also stimulates economic growth in the port area, hosting markets and various events that will continue throughout the first week of July.

Fisheries Agency Director-General Wang Mao-cheng (王茂城) emphasized the importance of adhering to international regulations regarding bluefin tuna, a species subject to global conservation efforts. He noted that Taiwanese fishers are well-informed about these conventions, and the government has implemented numerous policies to foster sustainable fishing practices and prevent overfishing.

The festival's success is further fueled by the support of local businesses. The event brings substantial traffic to the harbor and incorporates an outdoor market showcasing regional seafood and innovative goods.
