Kartini Day in Taipei: A Celebration of Indonesian Women's Empowerment

The Indonesian Diaspora in Taiwan Honors a National Heroine with Dance, Fashion, and Calls for Dignity.

Taipei, April 20 – The Indonesian Diaspora Network in Taiwan (IDN Taiwan) and the Puppetry Art Center of Taipei (PACT) celebrated Kartini Day on Sunday, commemorating the legacy of Raden Adjeng Kartini, an Indonesian women's rights pioneer. The event, held in Taipei, featured vibrant dance performances and a captivating fashion show that paid tribute to Kartini's enduring impact.

The festivities commenced with a mesmerizing traditional dance performance by an Indonesian dancer, followed by a fashion show showcasing Indonesian children in their beautiful traditional costumes. The event aimed to recreate the experience of Kartini Day celebrations in Indonesia, bringing a piece of home to the Indonesian community in Taiwan.

Dewi, deputy president of IDN Global, emphasized the importance of allowing Indonesian children in Taiwan to participate in the cultural traditions of their homeland, fostering a sense of belonging and continuity.

Indonesia's Deputy Representative to Taiwan Zulmartinof highlighted the alignment of Kartini Day's spirit with the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office to Taipei (IETO)'s mission to "empower" and "protect" Indonesians living and working in Taiwan. He emphasized the importance of dignified treatment for migrant Indonesian women, including fair wages and access to maternity leave.

PACT Director Tsai Yi-wei (蔡易衛) expressed the center's continued support for the event, marking the fifth consecutive year of collaboration with IDN Taiwan. He noted the natural synergy between the Kartini Day celebrations and the center's focus on children, making it a cherished fixture.

Kartini Day, observed annually on April 21st, honors Raden Ajeng Kartini, a national hero whose dedication to girls' education and women's empowerment during the Dutch colonial period continues to inspire.
