Toxic Secrets Beneath the Factory: 1700 Tons of Waste Buried in Taiwan

After a year-long investigation, environmental inspectors and law enforcement in Taiwan have uncovered a significant case of illegal waste disposal. The investigation revealed that the Liu Ho Chemical Trading Group, in an effort to cut costs, buried over 1700 metric tons of industrial waste beneath the foundation of its factory during a reconstruction project.

The Environmental Protection Administration announced the findings at a press conference, highlighting the collaboration between the Taoyuan City Environmental Protection Bureau, the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office, and the Third Brigade of the National Police Agency's Seventh Special Police Corps. According to Yu Li-chen, Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, the group is primarily involved in the import and trade of chemical raw materials. Its related businesses produce food additives, building materials, and resin coatings. The parent company boasts a capital exceeding NT$7 billion. The case, which involves three companies and ten defendants, was filed on May 9th.
