Taiwan: Migrant Worker Injured in Motorcycle Accident, Waits Hours for Help

In the early morning hours of July 19th, a 37-year-old migrant worker, identified as Mr. Fan, was involved in a motorcycle accident in Fenyuan Township, Changhua County, Taiwan. The incident occurred on Provincial Highway 139, section two of Dachang Road, when Mr. Fan lost control of his motorcycle while navigating a curve. The motorcycle reportedly hit a road marking, causing him to skid and collide with a concrete barrier near a street lamp.

Mr. Fan sustained multiple abrasions and bruises in the accident. Due to a lack of familiarity with local emergency procedures and language barriers, he was unable to contact authorities or properly report the accident. He remained at the scene for over three hours attempting to contact his employer for assistance. It was not until 9:47 AM, when a police officer on patrol discovered him, that emergency services were notified.

The police investigation revealed that the accident occurred around 6:30 AM. Mr. Fan was riding a standard motorcycle from Fenyuan towards Changhua City when the incident took place. Alcohol testing confirmed he was not under the influence. The preliminary assessment indicates that the accident was caused by improper handling of the vehicle and potentially wet road markings.

Mr. Fan was subsequently transported to the Changhua Christian Hospital for treatment. His injuries are not life-threatening. The police are currently conducting further investigation to determine the full extent of the accident and responsibility. This incident underscores the vulnerability of migrant workers in Taiwan when facing emergency situations, highlighting the importance of adequate support and information for this segment of the population.

The authorities have urged employers to enhance traffic safety education for migrant workers and ensure they are prepared with necessary emergency contact information and protocols. This will help to prevent similar situations in the future.
