Taipei, May 8 – A German national faces serious charges in Taiwan after being indicted by Taoyuan prosecutors for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin into the country in February.

According to a statement from the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office, the unnamed male suspect was apprehended on February 14th at Taoyuan International Airport. Customs officials discovered 3,400 grams of heroin concealed within his luggage.

Investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly traveled to Thailand on February 11th to acquire the drugs before returning to Taiwan.

During questioning, the suspect claimed ignorance of the contents of the luggage, stating that a man identified as "Mr. Chow" had offered him US$2.3 million to transport the package into Taiwan. Prosecutors have not released further details regarding "Mr. Chow."

The suspect has been indicted for a suspected contravention of the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act.

Taiwan categorizes heroin as a Category 1 narcotic. If convicted, the suspect could face the death penalty or life imprisonment.

Additionally, individuals sentenced to life imprisonment may be subject to a fine of up to NT$30 million (approximately US$991,614).
