Jakarta – Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa have reached an agreement to elevate bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. This significant development was announced during the 10th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCM) meeting held in Bangkok on Friday.

“This step reflects our increasingly close bilateral relations and a shared vision to contribute more to the region," stated Minister Sugiono. The meeting, co-chaired by the two foreign ministers, saw both sides commit to establishing a joint working team. This team will be tasked with developing a strategic partnership roadmap, identifying key sectors for deliverables, and preparing for the next high-level visit.

In the economic sphere, Indonesia and Thailand have pledged to expand market access for Indonesian products. This includes a focus on goods from the agriculture, fisheries, and MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) sectors. Minister Sugiono expressed enthusiasm regarding the interest of Thai investors in collaborating with prominent Indonesian companies.

Furthermore, the meeting highlighted a focus on the green energy transition, with both countries encouraging new cooperation in this vital area. The two ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the protection of citizens and the fight against human trafficking.

"I appreciate the support of the Thai government in the repatriation of Indonesian citizens who are victims of trafficking in persons. We must continue to strengthen collaboration to eradicate this transnational crime," Minister Sugiono emphasized.

Beyond bilateral matters, Ministers Sugiono and Sangiampongsa exchanged insights on regional and global challenges. Discussions included strengthening ASEAN’s role in regional stability, addressing the situation in Myanmar, and developments in Palestine.

Minister Sugiono characterized the meeting as “a new foundation for stronger, broader, and more strategic relations between Indonesia and Thailand.” The 10th JCM in Bangkok follows the 9th JCM, which took place in Indonesia in 2018. This year's meeting also commemorated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Thailand, which commenced on March 7, 1950.
