Taiwan Rocked: Eastern Coast Hit by Five Earthquakes in Just 12 Minutes

The eastern coast of Taiwan experienced a series of earthquakes this evening, starting with a magnitude 5.5 tremor at 6:09 PM. Within the next 12 minutes, four additional earthquakes struck the same area. These included a magnitude 4.9 earthquake at 6:10 PM, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake at 6:18 PM, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake, and a magnitude 4.4 earthquake at 6:21 PM. All epicenters were located in the eastern Taiwan sea.

According to Wu Chien-fu, director of the Central Weather Administration's Seismological Center, the initial magnitude 5.5 earthquake was caused by the collision between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate in central Taiwan. The eastern sea of Taiwan is prone to earthquakes, and these can occur at various depths.

The Central Weather Administration also indicated that aftershocks are possible in the next 3 to 4 days.
