Taiwan Bolsters Defense: 20,000 Reservists Called Up for Intense War Games

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan is significantly enhancing its defense readiness, with plans to mobilize 20,000 reservists for the annual Han Kuang 41 military exercises scheduled for July.

This year's exercises will feature an intensive two-week training program focusing on practical gun exercises. The reservists will receive comprehensive training, practicing shooting with various weapons in different positions, including standing, kneeling, and prone positions. This heightened focus on realistic combat scenarios underscores Taiwan's commitment to maintaining a strong defensive posture.

In 2024, the Han Kuang 40 drills involved 14,647 reservists, marking an increase of 2,000 from the previous year. The transformation of the reservist system is a key military priority for 2025, according to the Ministry of National Defense. The 2025 program will also incorporate responses to more realistic wartime situations and improved coordination of joint defense efforts.

Recognizing the importance of recruitment, the Ministry has actively pursued collaborations with educational institutions. Agreements have been established with 118 colleges and 420 high schools. This recruitment campaign has been successful, achieving 95.1% of its targets.

Furthermore, 82% of recruits have opted to extend their contracts, exceeding the ministry's target of 76%, a testament to the effectiveness of the recruitment and retention strategies.
