Fatal Highway Incident in Taiwan: Luxury SUV Crosses Four Lanes, Driver's Death Under Investigation

A 60-year-old driver dies after his luxury SUV veers across multiple lanes on National Highway 1 in Taiwan; authorities are investigating potential medical causes.

A tragic incident occurred on National Highway 1, a major highway in Taiwan, on the afternoon of December 12th, resulting in the death of a driver.

The incident took place at the 16.1-kilometer mark of the southbound lane, near the Neihu section. A black luxury SUV suddenly drifted towards the inner lanes before colliding with the guardrail. Witnessing the event, another driver immediately contacted the authorities. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the driver, identified as a 60-year-old man named Liu, without vital signs. Despite immediate medical attention at the Tri-Service General Hospital, Mr. Liu was pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigations by the Shilin District Prosecutors Office suggest the possibility of a sudden medical condition contributing to the accident. The SUV, initially traveling in the outer lane, unexpectedly veered across four lanes before impacting the median barrier. The vehicle then continued for approximately 100 meters, riding up the guardrail, before coming to a halt.

The Shilin District Prosecutors Office has stated that they are considering the potential for a sudden illness as a contributing factor. Further investigations, including a CT scan, are planned to ascertain the precise cause of death.

The police are advising motorists to monitor their health conditions, ensure adequate rest before driving, and avoid driving if they feel unwell. Drivers experiencing any health concerns while on the road are urged to activate their hazard lights to alert other vehicles and pull over to the shoulder to seek assistance.
