Tragedy in Taiwan: Black Bear's Demise Following Livestock Predation

In Hualien County, Taiwan, near the Zhongzheng community of Zhuoxi Township, a Formosan black bear was shot and killed after a series of incidents involving livestock predation and perceived threats to human safety. The incident has sparked both sadness and concern among authorities and the local population.

The black bear, identified by the Yushan National Park Headquarters (YNP) as YNP-BB02, had been previously captured and tagged four years ago. It was observed preying on chickens and, in a more unusual development, consuming dogs kept at a local work camp. At least four dogs were killed in the attacks, causing considerable fear within the community.

Local residents, along with public officials, formed a patrol to attempt to deter the bear and, if possible, capture it. However, during a patrol, the bear reportedly approached the patrol members. In the ensuing situation, the patrol personnel, fearing for their safety, shot and killed the bear. The Yushan National Park Headquarters expressed its regret at the loss of the black bear while also acknowledging the fear experienced by the community members.
