Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area in Taiwan Faces Closure Following Road Collapse

Taipei, April 30 - The Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area in Taiwan's Yilan County has been closed to the public due to a significant road collapse, impacting access to the popular natural attraction.

Forestry authorities announced the closure, which came into effect Wednesday, after a landslide triggered the collapse of a section of the access road, Yilan Exclusive Highway No. 1 (宜專1線), near the 7-kilometer marker. The damage affected the outer lane of the highway.

The park headquarters, in a press release, stated that the closure was necessary due to the risk of further expansion of the collapsed area. The tentative reopening date is set for next Tuesday. The closure was implemented at 3:30 p.m.

The Yilan branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency provided further details, explaining that the landslide resulted in the collapse of approximately 15 meters of roadway subgrade. The affected area extends about 10 stories down a mountain slope.

Following the road collapse, forestry officials promptly assisted the 682 individuals within the park, ensuring their safe evacuation down the mountain.
