Taiwan Investigates Outbreak of Illness Potentially Linked to Hot Pot Restaurant

Taipei, Taiwan – Health officials are investigating a potential food poisoning incident affecting a significant number of individuals in Taiwan. As of Friday, authorities reported that 63 people had fallen ill, with 33 seeking medical attention. The source of the illness is suspected to be linked to a hot pot restaurant.

The investigation, led by the local health bureau, involves comprehensive testing of various samples. Restaurant samples have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for analysis, alongside fecal samples collected from restaurant employees and affected customers.

The bureau initiated its investigation on Wednesday, following initial reports of customers experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Most of the affected individuals had dined at the restaurant between March 15th and 16th.

As a precautionary measure, the restaurant was ordered to temporarily suspend operations on Wednesday, while the bureau conducted inspections. Two "hygienic faults" were identified, leading to an order for the restaurant to make improvements within a specified timeframe.

The restaurant has since submitted its proof of improvement report and applied to resume operations. However, further health and safety checks will be conducted before operations can restart. Workers will be required to attend health and safety lectures and pass an examination.
