Taiwan's Army Bolsters Defense with New Portable Anti-Drone System

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – In a move to enhance its defense capabilities, the Taiwan Army is actively seeking proposals for a state-of-the-art portable anti-drone system. This initiative underscores Taiwan's commitment to integrating advanced technologies and fostering collaboration with the private sector.

The requirements for the new system, detailed in a recent government e-procurement system proposal, highlight its crucial role in modern warfare. The system must be capable of effectively jamming and taking control of Class I and II military drones, while simultaneously pinpointing the operator's location. Furthermore, the system's design emphasizes portability and ease of setup, crucial for rapid deployment.

Class I drones, typically weighing under 150 kg, encompass a range of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including micro, mini, and small UAVs. Class II drones, falling within the 150kg to 600kg range, are designed for more demanding tactical maneuvers and endurance. The new anti-drone system must be effective against both classes.

The proposed system is engineered to function reliably across diverse terrains and under varying weather conditions. Crucially, it must operate without disrupting military communications, electronic equipment, or friendly drone operations. Continuous operational capability is also a key specification: the system must provide at least eight hours of uninterrupted battery-powered use and a minimum of 24 hours when connected to a power source.

This project reflects the Taiwan military's strategic focus on strengthening its defense capabilities, particularly in the critical areas of anti-drone warfare and urban combat preparedness. It also demonstrates the nation's proactive approach in engaging the private sector to harness innovative solutions and achieve technological advancements that enhance national security.
