Malaysia Gears Up: Security Tightened for Upcoming ASEAN Summit

KUALA LUMPUR – With the 46th ASEAN Summit fast approaching, scheduled for May 26-27, Malaysia is significantly bolstering its security measures. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has conveyed his confidence in the robust preparedness of all national security agencies, ensuring a seamless and secure summit.

At the closing of the ASEAN – Malaysia 2025 Security Rehearsal Exercise on May 7, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan underscored the importance of a flawlessly executed summit to uphold Malaysia's standing on the global stage. He highlighted the necessity of rigorous security protocols, given the complex international climate.

Malaysia assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship from Laos on January 1. The summit this year is themed “Inclusion and Sustainability,” reflecting the nation’s ambition to foster a unified and flourishing ASEAN community.

This marks Malaysia’s fifth time chairing ASEAN, previously holding the role in 1977, 1997, and 2015.

To mitigate potential disruptions, schools near the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the summit venue, will transition to home-based learning. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that the Ministry of Education will identify schools located along key routes related to the summit. Furthermore, the government encourages private sector employers in the vicinity to facilitate remote work options for their employees during this period.

The Public Service Department has also issued guidelines allowing civil servants affected by potential traffic congestion to request Work From Home arrangements. This proactive approach demonstrates Malaysia's commitment to both security and operational efficiency during this crucial international event.
