ASEAN Eyes Nuclear Energy: A Bold Step Towards Clean Energy Independence

KUALA LUMPUR – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is actively exploring the potential of nuclear energy as a viable alternative to fossil fuels, aiming for a cleaner and more stable energy future. Discussions are underway to formulate strategies and action plans that will be implemented through the Civil Nuclear Energy (CNE) sector, forming a crucial component of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026-2030.

This development was revealed following the 15th Nuclear Energy Cooperation Sub-Sector Network (NEC – SSN) Meeting and related gatherings, held in Kuala Lumpur from April 28 to 30. The meeting was organized by Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA).

According to a statement released by PETRA on May 1, discussions centered on defining focus areas for strategies and action plans within the CNE sector, under the APAEC 2026-2030 framework. These plans will be presented and considered during the ASEAN Senior Official’s Meeting on Energy scheduled for June 2025 in Kuching, Sarawak.

Furthermore, the meeting assessed potential activities within the CNE sector that align with the APAEC 2026-2030 goals. The discussions involved collaborative efforts with international partners and organizations, including Korea Nuclear Security, Japan Atomic Energy Agency, and the Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership. These collaborations are designed to assist ASEAN in shaping its nuclear energy landscape within the region.
