Indonesia's Geological Gems Shine: UNESCO Adds Two New Global Geoparks

Kebumen and Meratus Join the Prestigious UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, Elevating Indonesia's Geological Heritage

JAKARTA – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially recognized two Indonesian geological parks, Kebumen in Central Java and Meratus in South Kalimantan, as Global Geoparks. This significant announcement was made during the 221st session of UNESCO's Executive Board held in Paris, France.

The Executive Board, comprising all 58 member countries including Indonesia, reached a consensus to approve 16 new geoparks. This decision followed recommendations from the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council's meetings in September and December 2024.

With the addition of Kebumen and Meratus, Indonesia now boasts a total of 12 geoparks within the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. These sites join a distinguished list that includes Batur, Belitong, Ciletuh, Gunung Sewu, Ijen, Maros Pangkep, Merangin Jambi, Raja Ampat, Rinjani Lombok, and the Toba Caldera.

Ambassador Mohamad Oemar, Indonesia’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO and head of the Indonesian delegation, highlighted the responsibilities that accompany the UNESCO Global Geopark designation. These include preserving, sustainably managing, and promoting Indonesia's geological and cultural heritage. He emphasized that this recognition underscores Indonesia's commitment to safeguarding globally significant heritage, conservation efforts, community empowerment, and global education.

The 16 newly designated geoparks represent nominations from 11 countries: China (Kanbula and Yunyang), North Korea (Mount Paektu), Ecuador (Napo Sumaco and Tungurahua), Indonesia (Kebumen and Meratus), Italy (Mur), Norway (Fjord Coast), the Republic of Korea (Danyang and Gyeongbuk), Saudi Arabia (Salma and North Riyadh), Spain (Costa Quebrada), the United Kingdom (Arran), and Việt Nam (Lạng Sơn).
