Taiwanese Nationals Detained in South Korea Over Filming at US Air Base

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Two Taiwanese citizens have been detained in South Korea following an incident involving unauthorized filming at a United States air base, according to South Korean police reports released on Monday.

The Yonhap News Agency reported that the two individuals are under investigation for unlawfully photographing US military equipment and infrastructure during an air show held at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, approximately 60 kilometers south of Seoul, on Saturday. The suspects, both male, are identified as being in their 40s and over 60, according to CNA.

While general photography is usually permitted at South Korean air shows, the US military implemented restrictions, barring citizens from certain countries, including China and Taiwan, from accessing the Osan Air Power Days event. These restrictions were put in place due to prior incidents involving unauthorized filming of South Korean military facilities.

Reportedly, the two Taiwanese nationals disregarded the ban and accessed the air show. The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency confirmed the detention, stating that the Pyeongtaek Police Station is holding the men.

The charges include a violation of South Korea's Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act, resulting in emergency detention. Authorities are currently deliberating whether to formally arrest the two suspects.
