Taiwan Gears Up: New Car Window Tint Regulations on the Horizon

Stricter Rules Coming for Window Tinting, Aiming for Safer Roads in Taiwan

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications in Taiwan is preparing to release guidelines regarding the permissible light transmittance levels for car window tinting. The details of the guidelines are expected to be published by the end of June. Following the announcement, efforts will be made to acquire testing equipment and train inspection personnel by the end of December. However, concerns were raised by legislator 洪孟楷 (Hong Meng-kai), who pointed out that the current regulations would only apply to new vehicles and lacked associated penalties, potentially allowing loopholes to be exploited.

The Ministry responded by stating that in addition to the guidelines, the regulations will be formalized and enforced for new vehicles starting next year, with penalties for those that do not comply.

The proposed guidelines, informed by international standards and domestic surveys, suggest the following light transmittance thresholds: General vehicles will require a minimum of 70% light transmittance for the front windshield, and 70% or higher for front side windows (between the A and B pillars), or no less than 35% for individual considerations; the rear side windows (between the B and C pillars) will need at least 35% light transmittance, or be unrestricted; and the rear windshield will also require at least 35% light transmittance, or be unrestricted.
