Taiwan Launches Road Safety Survey for Foreign Residents

Taipei, Taiwan – The Control Yuan, Taiwan's government watchdog, is reaching out to foreign residents with a critical mission: to gather insights on road safety. The initiative encourages foreigners living in Taiwan to participate in a multilingual survey designed to assess the effectiveness of current public safety measures.

The survey, available in English, Chinese, Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia, Vietnamese, and Thai, offers a unique opportunity for anonymous feedback. Control Yuan member Yeh Ta-hua (葉大華) emphasized the importance of this initiative in a recent press release.

The survey comes at a time when data from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications reveals a concerning trend: incidents involving foreign nationals have nearly doubled in the last five years. The data show that total traffic casualties and deaths in Taiwan rose from 362,393 in 2020 to 393,882 in 2024. Incidents involving foreign nationals increased from 7,365 to 13,004.

“To gain a deeper understanding of the transportation challenges faced by foreigners in Taiwan, Control Yuan Member Yeh Ta-hua has launched a multilingual questionnaire inviting foreign residents to share their experiences and suggestions,” the statement explained.

The questionnaire delves into crucial aspects of road safety, including the clarity of English instructions in different cities and counties, the perceived awareness of drivers regarding pedestrians, and the effectiveness of local public transportation. Respondents are also invited to share their suggestions on how to improve existing safety measures.

This survey aims to address transportation challenges specifically affecting foreign residents, mostly from Indonesia and Vietnam, to enhance the safety for everyone on the roads of Taiwan.

Foreign residents are encouraged to complete the questionnaire before May 23rd.
