Taiwan Probes Government Workers: Chinese ID Cards and Residence Certificates Discovered

MAC Reveals Findings in Initial Phase of Investigation into Government Employees with Ties to China

Taipei, Taiwan - Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) announced the initial findings of an investigation into government employees, revealing that two individuals held Chinese ID cards, while 75 possessed Chinese residence certificates.

The investigation, which began at the end of April, examined the status of approximately 370,000 military personnel, civil servants, and public-school teachers. MAC head Chiu Chui-cheng (邱垂正) provided these details to reporters before a legislative committee hearing on Monday.

"Of the approximately 370,000 workers investigated, only two were found to have Chinese ID cards," stated Chiu. He further noted that another 75 government employees within the same three categories were holding Chinese residence certificates.

The Taiwan government has taken action to assist the 77 individuals in revoking their Chinese documentation. Furthermore, Chiu highlighted that an impressive 99.87% of the 370,000 workers investigated have signed an affidavit confirming they do not possess any form of Chinese identification.

The MAC emphasized that active military personnel, civil servants, and public-school teachers in Taiwan are strictly prohibited from obtaining Chinese household registration, Chinese ID cards, permanent residence permits, or residence permits. Violation of these regulations could result in the loss of household registration and citizenship in Taiwan, as per existing Taiwanese law.
