Power Outage Shocks Tainan: 16,903 Households Experience Brief Blackout

A sudden power outage in Tainan City, Taiwan, impacting the Xin Guang San Yue Xi Men store and surrounding areas, caused by a circuit breaker malfunction.

Tainan City, Taiwan, experienced a widespread power outage on the morning of December 12th, affecting approximately 16,903 households. The incident, which occurred around 10:51 AM, impacted areas including the Xin Guang San Yue Xi Men store in the central-western district.

According to the Tainan District Office of Taipower, the outage was caused by an internal equipment malfunction at the Yanping distribution substation. The interruption lasted for about 10 minutes, with power being fully restored by 11:18 AM after rapid repair efforts. The Chia-nan Supply Area Operation Office initially attributed the cause to a faulty circuit breaker protection relay. A detailed investigation is still underway to determine the exact cause.

The central business district of Tainan was temporarily disrupted. Businesses and residents in the affected areas experienced a period of uncertainty due to the interruption of electricity supply. Taipower is conducting further inspections to clarify the reasons and enhance equipment inspections to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Following the event, Taipower issued a statement confirming that the outage, caused by equipment failure, affected several districts, including the central-western, Anping, North, East, and South districts. The company quickly responded to the incident, restoring power to 16,902 households within ten minutes, representing over 99% of those affected. Taipower expressed its regret for the incident and encouraged users with any continued power issues to contact their customer service line, 1911.
