Taiwan Coast Guard Upgrades: New Drones to Fortify Maritime Security

Enhancing Surveillance and Response Capabilities in the Face of Evolving Threats

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Coast Guard Administration of Taiwan is set to procure a new generation of drones to bolster its maritime capabilities, according to reports released on Saturday.

This initiative aims to significantly enhance the Coast Guard's ability to combat smuggling, human trafficking, and improve the effectiveness of rescue operations, as reported by CNA. The first generation of 20 unmanned aerial vehicles, delivered in 2018, played a crucial role in gathering intelligence and strengthening surveillance efforts.

These initial drones have been deployed across the island of Taiwan, as well as on Coast Guard vessels, supporting rescue missions and counter-smuggling operations. They have also actively participated in maritime security training and special surveillance missions.

Taiwan is currently facing increased activities from Chinese vessels, including maneuvers by the People’s Liberation Army Navy, as well as instances of illegal fishing and sand dredging conducted by civilian Chinese ships. Concerns have also arisen regarding overseas-registered vessels with links to China that are suspected of damaging undersea communication cables connecting Taiwan and its outlying islands.

The Coast Guard Administration currently provides training courses for drone operators. Current drones face challenges related to limited takeoff and landing space, and comparatively short flight times, typically lasting only 50 minutes or less.

The forthcoming second generation of drones is anticipated to offer extended flight durations, up to two hours, and will utilize a hybrid power system that combines fuel and electricity, according to the administration. Furthermore, the Coast Guard is prepared to support the Ministry of National Defense in missions related to national security, if required.
