Ilan's Water Resource Recovery Center Scoops National Sustainability Award: A Wastewater Triumph

The Ilan Water Resource Recovery Center in Taiwan has achieved a significant milestone, being recognized with the prestigious "Clean Water Sustainability Award" by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA). Notably, Ilan stands out as the sole non-major city (non-six major cities) to receive the honor in the wastewater treatment and resource utilization category, highlighting its commitment to environmental innovation.

The center’s success stems from its pioneering approach, particularly its nationally unique sludge carbonization system. This innovative technology converts wastewater sludge into a supplementary fuel source. The resulting carbon emission reduction is equivalent to the carbon sequestration capacity of approximately 29 Daan Forest Parks, demonstrating a substantial positive impact on the environment.

The EPA initiated the Clean Water Sustainability Award to acknowledge and promote advancements in wastewater treatment technologies, energy efficiency, resource utilization, and carbon emissions reduction. The second annual awards recognized a total of 15 outstanding entities. Among the winners, the Ilan Water Resource Recovery Center joins the ranks of industry leaders such as TSMC and ASE. In the wastewater treatment and resource utilization - sewer system category, the other awardees are "Kaohsiung Suburban Wastewater System - Fengshan Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant" and "National Science and Technology Council Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau Tainan Park Wastewater Sewer System". This award underscores Ilan's dedication to sustainability and positions it as a model for other communities in Taiwan.
