Major Marijuana Smuggling Ring Uncovered in Taiwan: Three Indicted

Kaohsiung, Taiwan – Authorities have indicted three individuals in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in connection with a significant marijuana smuggling operation, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking within the country.

The Ciaotou District Prosecutors Office announced the indictments of three suspects identified by their last names: Tsai (蔡), Liu (劉), and Lai (賴). They face charges under the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act.

The investigation began late last year following a tip-off. A special task force was established to monitor the suspects' activities. According to prosecutors, the scheme involved Tsai traveling to Thailand to procure the marijuana, Lai utilizing his position as a freighter crew member to transport the drugs, and Liu handling communications with the Thai supplier and managing the distribution of the marijuana within Taiwan.

In early January, Tsai obtained 27 bags of marijuana, along with cannabis cigarettes, at Laem Chabang Port in Thailand. The shipment was then transported by Lai. Upon the ship's arrival at the Port of Kaohsiung on January 10th, Tsai and Lai met to transfer the illicit goods.

Authorities intercepted Tsai and Liu in a parking lot where eight bags of marijuana (weighing 1.265 kilograms) were being unloaded. Tsai then attempted to transport the remaining drugs via the Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR), but was apprehended at Zuoying Station with 2.173 kilograms of marijuana and other illicit items, including cannabis cigarettes.

Both Liu and Lai were subsequently arrested for their alleged involvement.

Prosecutors estimate the street value of the seized marijuana to be around NT$6 million (approximately US$181,654).

All three suspects have been detained following a court order.

Taiwan classifies marijuana as a Category 2 narcotic. Conviction for producing, transporting, or selling marijuana carries a potential sentence of 10 years to life imprisonment and fines of up to NT$15 million.
