Power Surge Shakes Taiwan: Disruptions in Kaohsiung's Key Infrastructure

A significant power surge disrupted operations in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, today, impacting key infrastructure and leading to widespread outages. Taipower confirmed that a cable fault at the Kaohsiung Port ultra-high voltage substation was the cause.

The incident resulted in voltage drops across three major technology parks in the Kaohsiung area: the Cianjhen Technology Industrial Park, the Kaohsiung Science Park, and the Nanzih Technology Industrial Park. Numerous users throughout the city experienced voltage fluctuations, triggering equipment shutdowns at critical services.

The high-speed rail (High-Speed Rail) and the Kaohsiung MRT (High-Speed Rail), as well as the water supply system, and other major consumers, were all affected by the power surge.

Taipower's Kaohsiung-Pingtung Power Distribution Operation Office stated that the incident occurred at 12:35 PM today during the system integration of a newly installed 161 kV No. 10 busbar connection cable at the Kaohsiung Port ultra-high voltage substation. The fault in the connecting cable caused the voltage drop. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause, and Taipower is actively working to address the issue.
