Taiwan's Growing Global Clout: Diplomatic Presence Expands in Taipei

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The international community is significantly strengthening its diplomatic presence in Taiwan, reflecting the island's increasing importance on the global stage.

According to Nikkei Asia, Taipei welcomed approximately 400 official and de facto diplomats last year, a substantial increase of 300 individuals compared to 2022. The report, based on inquiries with various missions, highlights the growing presence of countries like the US, the UK, and Japan.

The report underscores the rising prestige of postings in Taipei, which were previously considered less desirable than those in China. Missions are also intensifying collaborations with local think tanks, such as DSET, on projects related to energy, semiconductors, and drone technology, as stated by CEO Jeremy Chih-Cheng Chang.

The US maintains the largest diplomatic mission in Taiwan through the American Institute in Taiwan, its de facto embassy. Taiwan hosted over 110 US diplomats last year, compared to 80 in 2022. AIT employs over 550 staff, according to its website.

Retired US Ambassador Stephen Young noted that the increase in personnel reflects Taiwan's growing recognition as a technological powerhouse, alongside international concerns regarding its defense posture in relation to China. Young stated that during his tenure as AIT director from 2006 to 2009, the staff numbered around 250.

Young also expressed concerns regarding the potential impact of a US administration under Donald Trump on the US diplomatic presence in Taiwan. The Trump administration has previously reduced foreign development and aid programs, and Trump has suggested that Taiwan should assume more responsibility for its own defense.

“I do worry that Mr. Trump might seek to reduce the numbers," the article quoted Young as saying. “But Taiwan has many friends on both sides of the aisle in both the House and Senate. So he would face a great deal of pushback if he tried.”

Japan has also enhanced its diplomatic representation in Taiwan, reporting 40 diplomats last year, up from 25 in 2022. The Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, Japan’s de facto embassy in Taipei, has seen its staff grow from approximately 50 to 110 in the last five years.

The Australian Office in Taiwan employs over 50 staff members, including an individual dedicated to military and defense affairs, as the report indicated.

Meanwhile, the German Institute Taipei plans to create a new position within its political department. It will also expand its staff to manage consular affairs, a decision linked to TSMC’s investments in the country.

Missions from the Czech Republic, Sweden, and the European Union have also reported personnel expansions.
