Bill Gates to Launch Revolutionary Pregnancy Supplement in Indonesia

Jakarta - Philanthropist Bill Gates has announced plans to introduce a comprehensive micronutrient supplement for pregnant women in Indonesia, aiming to tackle anaemia, a widespread issue affecting many women. The initiative, spearheaded by the Gates Foundation, marks a significant step towards improving maternal and child health.

The announcement was made during Gates' visit to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, where he met with President Prabowo Subianto. The meeting occurred in anticipation of the 25th anniversary of the Gates Foundation.

"We have evidence that we call a multiple micronutrient supplement for pregnant women as a substitute for those who only consume folic acid and amino acids," stated Gates at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. He described the product as a multiple micronutrient supplement (MMS), encompassing a variety of vitamins and micronutrients crucial for foetal development. Indonesia will be among the first countries to receive the supplement due to its ongoing struggles with malnutrition.

Gates highlighted the prevalence of anaemia and amino acid deficiencies among women. "Our foundation offers an approach through this supplement to fix anaemia. Hence, over the next year or two, we plan to launch it in Indonesia," he revealed.

According to the Gates Foundation's social media, MMS supplements have demonstrated safety and effectiveness in preventing malnutrition in both pregnant women and their babies. The MMS tablets are formulated with 15 essential vitamins and minerals for pregnancy, priced at approximately US$2.60, or Rp43 thousand, based on the current exchange rate.

Besides the micronutrient supplement, Gates' visit to Indonesia included discussions with President Prabowo Subianto on global health, nutrition, financial inclusion, and public digital infrastructure. President Prabowo also mentioned the TB vaccine trial in Indonesia, which the Gates Foundation is currently funding and which is now in the clinical trial stage.
