Taiwan Rejects Xi Jinping's Sovereignty Claims: A Bold Stand for Independence

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan has strongly refuted Chinese leader Xi Jinping's recent op-ed in Russia's Rossiyskaya Gazeta, which contained claims of sovereignty over Taiwan. The response, issued on Thursday, highlights Taiwan's unwavering commitment to its independence and sovereignty.

MOFA labeled Xi's article a "deliberate attempt" to mislead the international community and undermine Taiwan's status. The ministry underscored Taiwan's sovereignty by referencing key legal documents, including the Cairo Declaration, Potsdam Proclamation, and the Japanese Instrument of Surrender. These documents, according to MOFA, clearly establish the Republic of China's sovereignty over Taiwan.

The statement further emphasized that the People's Republic of China (PRC) did not exist during the period covered by these historical agreements, rendering its claims over Taiwan "historically and legally groundless."

Furthermore, MOFA clarified the scope of UN Resolution 2758, stating that the resolution makes no mention of Taiwan, nor does it state that Taiwan is part of the PRC. The ministry also pointed out that the resolution does not grant the PRC the authority to represent Taiwan or its people within the United Nations.

In conclusion, MOFA reiterated that the democratically elected government of Taiwan is the sole legitimate representative of the 23.5 million Taiwanese citizens within the UN system and other international platforms.
