Taiwan Braces for Heavy Rain and Strong Winds: Alerts Issued Across the Island

Taipei, May 7 – The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued heavy rain advisories and strong wind alerts for numerous cities and counties across Taiwan, as a weather front brings unsettled conditions to the island.

The CWA forecasts brief periods of heavy rainfall across northern Taiwan, Yilan, and the mountainous areas of Taichung, Nantou, and Hualien. Residents in these areas should prepare for potential thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusts of wind.

The weather agency also cautions of potential risks, including landslides, rockfalls, and surges in rivers, particularly in mountainous regions affected by the heavy rainfall. A heavy rain advisory was issued early Wednesday morning for Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu City and County, Miaoli County, Yilan County, and the mountainous areas of Taichung, Nantou, and Hualien.

The advisory signifies that over 80 millimeters of rainfall is expected within a 24-hour period, or over 40 millimeters within a single hour.

Data from the CWA website, as of 12:50 p.m., indicated that Baoshan Township in Hsinchu had recorded the highest accumulated rainfall, reaching 114 mm, followed closely by Nanzhuang Township in Miaoli, with 108 mm.

The CWA has also issued a strong wind warning for Wednesday, with sustained winds of at least 39 kilometers per hour and gusts potentially reaching 62 kph. This warning applies to parts of Keelung, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Pingtung, as well as Green Island and Orchid Island.

The strong wind alert is scheduled to remain in effect until Thursday afternoon, according to the agency.
