Malaysia Bolsters Immigration Integrity: 600 Body-Worn Cameras Incoming

PUTRAJAYA – The Home Ministry of Malaysia is set to significantly enhance the integrity of its Immigration Department by acquiring 600 body-worn cameras for its officers. This initiative, announced by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, is part of a broader effort to address integrity concerns within the department.

The acquisition of the cameras, slated for April 28th, reflects a direct mandate from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Saifuddin explained that the Prime Minister’s directive followed reports regarding integrity issues within the Immigration Department. "He (Anwar) wants body-worn cameras to be used and when the director-general informed me, I immediately asked the ministry secretary-general to expedite this," stated Saifuddin during the Home Ministry’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri reception.

Saifuddin emphasized the government's commitment to professionalism among its enforcement agencies. The move is expected to mitigate corruption risks and improve transparency. The Minister also noted that the initiative aligns with the Prime Minister's vision for national progress.

In addition to the body-worn cameras, the Home Ministry is implementing other improvements. Starting in June, manual counters at most airports nationwide will be replaced with autogates, with the aim of reducing congestion and speeding up travel. Saifuddin also highlighted the Prime Minister's appreciation for the Home Ministry staff's performance during the recent official visit of China’s President Xi Jinping.

This effort builds on previous initiatives to equip enforcement officers with body-worn cameras. Over 7,000 cameras have already been deployed to district police headquarters and police stations nationwide. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement officers also began using 100 body-worn cameras this year, demonstrating a concerted effort to enhance accountability across various enforcement divisions.
