NAYPYIDAW – The aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Myanmar continues to unfold, revealing a grim toll of human suffering and destruction. As of April 20, the earthquake has claimed the lives of 3,735 individuals, with 5,108 reported injured and 120 people still missing, according to Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, spokesman for the State Planning Council.

In a statement addressing the casualties, injuries, missing persons, and the ongoing international relief efforts, Major General Zaw Min Tun expressed the government's deep sorrow for the affected families. He also announced the government's commitment to providing compensation, as stated by the Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Planning Council, to the families of the deceased and injured. Furthermore, arrangements are being made to offer compensation to those who have lost their homes, with the amount determined by the type of dwelling.

The international community has swiftly responded to the crisis. Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun reported that 145 aircraft from 25 countries, 23 vehicles from China, five ships from India, and one ship from Bangladesh have arrived to provide aid. The rescue and relief operations are bolstered by the arrival of 2,094 rescue workers, 2,514.6 tons of relief supplies, and 1,197.12 tons of relief materials.

The powerful earthquake, registering 7.7 on the Richter scale, struck at 12:51:02 PM local time on March 28. The epicenter was located approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Mandalay, causing significant damage and widespread destruction across the Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, northeastern Shan State, Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, and Bago Region.
