Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te Vows to Bolster Worker Protections

Government Initiatives to Improve Labor Rights, Address Economic Challenges, and Foster a Secure Future for Taiwanese Workers

Taipei, May 1st – On International Workers' Day, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) reaffirmed the Taiwanese government's commitment to strengthening worker protections. The President highlighted ongoing efforts to improve labor rights and ensure a secure future for Taiwanese workers.

In a social media message, President Lai (賴清德) expressed gratitude to Taiwanese workers for their dedication and contributions across various professions. He emphasized that the government will continue to elevate workers' rights and interests through legislative reforms, reduced taxation for employees, and incentives for private sector salary increases.

President Lai (賴清德) also underscored the government's support for businesses, recognizing the crucial link between business stability and job security. He stated that the more robust businesses are, the more secure workers' jobs will be.

To mitigate the impact of global economic challenges, particularly U.S. tariffs, and to bolster Taiwan's economic resilience, the Cabinet has proposed a draft bill for a NT$410 billion (US$12.7 billion) funding allocation. This funding aims to cushion the impact on Taiwanese industries, stabilize the job market, and strengthen Taiwan's digital and security infrastructure. The NT$410 billion funding authorization bill was finalized by the Cabinet on April 24th and is now awaiting legislative approval.
