Kaikai Case: Expert Testimony Reveals Suspected Abuse and Sparks Emotion in Taiwanese Courtroom

The trial involving the tragic death of the 1-year-10-month-old boy, known as "Kaikai," allegedly abused by his caregivers, Liu Tsai-hsuan and Liu Jo-lin, continues in Taipei District Court. The case, being heard by a jury of lay citizens (国民法官), has seen compelling expert testimonies.

Today's proceedings included expert witnesses offering their insights. The court heard from Hsu Cho-hsien, the pathology section chief from the Forensic Medicine Institute, in the morning. In the afternoon, Dr. Lu Li, Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the National Taiwan University (台大) Children's Hospital, took the stand. Dr. Lu's testimony vividly described the suspected abuse suffered by "Kaikai," prompting tears among some of the observers in the courtroom.

During his testimony, Dr. Lu became visibly emotional. The presiding judge even asked if he wanted to take a break, but Dr. Lu chose to continue. He shared harrowing details, stating, "I don't know how to say it... his hands and feet were tied. Have you considered how a child would go to the bathroom when tied up?" His words shocked the jury members.
