Broken Promises in Kaohsiung: Building Collapse Leaves Residents Homeless and Frustrated

In Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the aftermath of a 2022 building collapse continues to haunt residents. The incident, which occurred at a construction site on Ziqiang 1st Road, led to the demolition of seven nearby homes deemed unsafe. While six households reached a settlement with the construction company, Yuma Construction, the promise of rebuilding has yet to materialize, leaving residents in temporary housing and deeply frustrated.

The collapse, which was at a site planned for a 15-story residential building, initially caused a minor cave-in in March 2022. After emergency repairs, construction resumed. However, on August 14th of the same year, a significant water and sand leak led to further ground subsidence, affecting seven homes along Ziqiang 1st Road and Lane 83, Ziqiang 1st Road. These homes sustained structural damage and were subsequently deemed hazardous and demolished.

Affected residents question the effectiveness of the settlement process, highlighting the perceived lack of support and protection from the local government. They express bewilderment and discontent over the prolonged delay in the rebuilding process.
