U.S. Slams China's UN Tactics: A Show of Support for Taiwan

Taipei, Taiwan - The United States has strongly criticized the People's Republic of China (PRC) for its alleged "misuse" of a 1971 United Nations resolution to exclude the Republic of China (ROC, Taiwan) from the international organization. The Taiwanese government has expressed its gratitude for the U.S. stance.

The criticism was delivered by Ting Wu, deputy political counselor of the United States Mission to the United Nations, during a UN Security Council meeting convened by the PRC at UN headquarters in New York. A transcript of the meeting was subsequently released.

Referencing the meeting's Concept Note, which advocated opposing "all forms of unilateralism and bullying," Wu specifically condemned China's "misuse of U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758."

Wu highlighted China's actions as attempts to isolate Taiwan, misrepresent other nations' policies, and restrict their options. He emphasized that the resolution "does not preclude Taiwan's meaningful participation in the U.N. system and other multilateral fora."

Adding to the statement, Wu stated, "Working closely with our allies and partners, the United States will continue to counter Beijing's goals of embedding its authoritarian principles here at the United Nations."

In response to the U.S. comments, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) issued a statement on Thursday expressing Taipei's appreciation to Washington for the supportive message.

MOFA noted that this marks the first time the U.S. has raised this issue during a U.N. Security Council meeting. Previously, the Donald Trump administration had criticized the PRC's use of the resolution during the World Health Organization's 156th session of the Executive Board in February.

U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, addressed the matter of China's representation in the international body. The resolution led to the ROC, Taiwan, losing its seat at the U.N. to the PRC. Consequently, Taiwan has been largely excluded from participating in the international organization and its related bodies, due to the lack of recognition as a sovereign state by the U.N. and the majority of its member states.
