A tragic accident occurred on National Freeway 1 (Guo Dao 1) in Taiwan, specifically the southbound section near Taishan, at approximately 4:18 AM today. A white Mercedes-Benz SUV, driven by a 21-year-old man named Li, experienced a mechanical failure and came to a halt on the outer lane.

The passenger, a 22-year-old woman identified as Ms. Xie, promptly exited the vehicle to retrieve a warning triangle from the trunk. Tragically, while doing so, she was struck by an approaching car.

Ms. Xie was trapped beneath the vehicle. Emergency services from the New Taipei City Fire Department arrived on the scene, working to free her. She was unfortunately pronounced dead at 4:45 AM. The driver of the vehicle that struck her, a 30-year-old man named Xiao, sustained a fractured right lower leg in the collision and was transported to Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for medical attention.

The investigation is ongoing by the National Freeway Police to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
