Double the Joy: Formosan Black Bears Reunited with Nature in Taiwan

A triumphant rescue story highlights conservation efforts and community spirit in Taitung County.

Taipei, April 1 – In a remarkable feat of conservation, the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency announced the successful rescue and release of a male and female Formosan black bear back into the wild in Taitung County, Taiwan. This dual rescue marks a historic first for the agency.

The incident unfolded at 2 p.m. on Monday when a patrol team from Yanping Township discovered the bears ensnared in traps at the boundary of an Indigenous reserve and a state-owned forest, located at an elevation of 725 meters.

The male bear, weighing 60 kilograms, and the female, at 43 kilograms, both had their left forelimbs caught in snares, positioned approximately 10 meters apart.

Fortunately, the bears sustained only minor injuries. After receiving immediate on-site medical attention, including wound cleaning, they were carefully monitored until the anesthesia wore off.

Once fully alert, the bears were observed walking back into their natural habitat, a testament to the efficiency and care provided.

The rescue is a significant achievement for the local community, representing the first time two Formosan black bears have been rescued simultaneously and returned to their home.

A tribal member from the rescue team shared their relief and pride, stating, "We're happy we did the right thing. We helped our neighbors, the bears, safely return home."

Recognizing the increasing presence of Formosan black bears in lowland and settlement areas, the agency stated it will continue to provide improved hunting equipment to local farmers and tribes to aid in managing other wildlife without endangering the protected bears.
